Retail investors have always been a key segment to our Malaysian capital market. While we are committed to sustaining our current Retail investor base, we believe that there are more opportunities for Retailers to enter this market. This year, Bursa Malaysia in partnership with CGS-CIMB Securities is taking a proactive step to bring you INVESTHACK, a first of its kind hackathon designed to co-create new meaningful and impactful services, software, apps, or solutions to tackle some of our key business problems.

Themes

Each team must come up with an innovative solution to any one of the four problem statements below:

Attracting more Malaysian retailers into share investment
As at 30 June 2020, Malaysia’s employed population is estimated to be 14.99 million (~45.8% of our total population). Approximately, 7.6% of these individuals invest in Malaysian equities. How do we increase the participation of Retail investors in Malaysian equities?
Improving financial literacy amongst Malaysians
1 in 3 Malaysians rate themselves to be of low financial knowledge . We have endeavoured to educate Malaysians through our online platforms such as BursaMKTPLC, MLT and Bursa Academy. How do we further improve the financial literacy of Malaysians?
Assist Malaysians to overcome herding behaviour in share investment
The need for quick decision making when important news flash on trading screens can put Retailers in a vulnerable situation, so they follow the herd to feel secure. How do we assist Malaysians to make informed financial decisions quickly?

Process

Registration
Interested teams are required to register here on or before 15th November 2020. Successful registrations will receive an e-mail confirmation within 3 working days.
The Hacking
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, INVESTHACK will be a 100% virtual event. Registered Participants will receive the Kickoff Kit during the Pre-Hack Virtual Briefing Session on 16 November 2020
Demo Day
There will be 2 demo days. The 1st demo will consist of the Top 20 teams that are shortlisted. The 2nd demo day will only involve the Top 10 teams. Each demo day will require participants to conduct a virtual presentation of their solutions to a panel of judges.
Eligibility

INVESTHACK is open to:
  • Individuals aged 18 years old and over
  • Malaysians or Non-Malaysians with a valid Malaysian PR work/student permit
INVESTHACK is a team-based competition. Each team must have between a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 members, with at least 1 coder.

Yes, this is a team-based competition so you must have a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 members; with at least 1 coder in the team.

You can as a Team, but make sure you have at least 1 coder in your team so that you can build and submit a working prototype.

No, this event is completely free for all eligible participants.

You’re required to build an exciting solution in the retail investment space. You are encouraged to build something new and innovative to make the retail investment experience smarter and more accessible.

We will brief all registered participants via a Virtual Briefing session on the 16th of November 2020.

This Virtual Hackathon begins on Friday, 20th of November 2020 at 12pm and ends on Sunday, 22nd of November 2020 at 12pm.

We want to see highly creative solutions which will benefit the target audience. We want to see innovation, originality, good design and also evaluate the technical ability of the team members.

You can participate in the Virtual Hackathon from anywhere in Malaysia, but if your team is shortlisted into the Top 10, you will be required to be at Bursa Malaysia headquarters in KL for the Grand Finals event. This is subject to COVID-19 related regulations and SOPs set by the government of Malaysia, and may be converted into a Virtual event if necessary

Not for the Virtual segment but if you make it to the Grand Finals event, there will be more than enough food and drinks. Do not worry.

No, we do not provide any transport or accommodation for the top 10 teams. The teams will be required to arrange for their own transport and accommodation for the Finals and bring their own laptops and any other equipment that may be required for the presentation.

For the 1st round of evaluation, all teams are required to submit 3 items; the app/prototype developed for the purpose of this hackathon, an introduction video of the team and a screen capture video to demo how the app/prototype works. For the 2nd round of evaluation, the top 20 teams will be required to submit the app/prototype developed for the purpose of this hackathon and do a virtual presentation/demo of their final work to our panel of Judges. At the Grand Finals event, the top 10 teams will be required to demo a working prototype on stage to our Grand Judges. We do not accept mockups on presentation decks at any stage of the competition.
